A record number of students at Kingston Grammar School (KGS) have been selected for England hockey teams.

Four Kingston Grammar pupils have been selected to join the 2022 England U16 Hockey Squads, it was announced last Friday.

This is the highest number of pupils at a single school in England selected to join the teams, the school's Director of Sport said.

The four students are Fourth Year Tula Knowles and Fifth Years Ed Wheeler, Teddy Warner and Mikey Eldridge.

KGS Director of Sport, Andy Watts, said: "It is a huge achievement to have any students selected for national squads: to have four from a school of our relatively small size is incredible, and KGS is the only school in the country which currently has that number of players involved across the U16 age groups.

"We look forward to supporting them in their preparation for the upcoming training camps and fixtures in the next few months."

Head Master Stephen Lehec said: "Our congratulations go to Tula, Ed, Teddy and Mikey, whose dedication and perseverance has paid off.

"Having the chance to play international matches at this age is a wonderful opportunity. They have worked extremely hard and are all excellent role models for sport at KGS.

"We are very proud of them and wish them all the best of luck."

Outside school, Tula and Mikey play at Wimbledon Hockey Club, Ed is at Teddington HC and Teddy is a member of Surbiton HC, all of which are leading clubs in South-West London.

Back in 2020, the independent school on London Road unveiled an Alumni Wall artwork celebrating former students who have gone on to achieve success.

Olympians James Cracknell and Sophie Hosking feature along with international England Hockey stars Zach Wallace and Sarah Evans.

A statement on the KGS website reads: "We are delighted that Old Kingstonians now feature so prominently on the exterior of the school site.

"Described by the Head Master as "a live piece of art which will continue to grow and develop", we look forward to adding to it in the years to come, and we hope that it will inspire current KGS students and become a source of civic pride for the people of Kingston."
