Railway worker dies on tracks near Surbiton

A railway worker has died on the tracks near Surbiton

The Network Rail worker, who was 30-years-old and from Hampshire, was struck by a South Western Railway train this morning.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said:

"Officers were called to the line close to Surbiton railway station at 11.39am this morning (9 February) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death."

South Wester Rail have tweeted in the last few minutes:

"Following emergency services dealing with an incident all lines between Surbiton and Weybridge have now reopened.

"Bus Replacement buses are still in place with delays and alterations to train services.

"Disruption is expected until 19:00."

Union bosses have warned about the number of near misses for railway workers.

However they also do not want to speculate what happened in this instance until a full investigation has been conducted.
