Public waiting rooms at Surbiton Station could be upgraded under new plans.

South Western Railway (SWR) has submitted proposals to improve the facilities at Surbiton station, which is in Zone 6.

The plans, submitted to Kingston Council, would see the waiting rooms on platforms 1/2 and 3/4 of the station undergo internal refurbishment.

The layout of both waiting rooms would be changed to accommodate more seats and a standing workstation with charging points, while they would be redecorated to improve their appearance.

The station opened in 1838, before being rebuilt in 1937 in Art Deco style.

It was granted Grade II listed status in 1983 and is owned by Network Rail and operated by SWR.

Application documents said increased footfall at the station since it was rebuilt has brought about the need for more facilities, along with the refurbishment of all areas, including the waiting rooms.

They added: "South Western Railway's upkeep of the building has been continued throughout their tenure as train operator, and the proposed refurbishment works are much-needed improvements to the station without disturbing the existing external fabric of the building. The proposed works are in keeping with [what is] now currently being carried out throughout most of the SWR station network."

Kingston Council will decide on the plans in due course.
