Plans for a new 20 metre-high phone mast outside a local supermarket have been refused by council planners.

Everything Everywhere Limited has been refused prior approval for the structure outside Sainsbury's on Raeburn Avenue in Surbiton.

The scheme would have seen an existing eight-metre high monopole - currently built as part of a lamppost - removed and replaced with the new mast.

But planners at Kingston Council said the development would have been out of keeping with the local area.

A council report said: "The proposal by virtue of its siting and appearance would result in an incongruous addition to the streetscene that would be visually intrusive and create visual clutter and would not be in keeping with and detract from the character and appearance of the surrounding area."
