A beloved local pub in the north of Kingston has been crowned 'pub of the year' in a borough wide competition this week.

The Wych Elm was presented with the CAMRA Kingston Pub of the Year award on Wednesday evening.

The Kingston branch of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is one of around 200 CAMRA across the UK engaged in local campaigning and social activities to promote real ale and support the pubs that sell it.

Established in 1971, the organisation advocates pubs as social centres and a key part of the UK's cultural heritage. Beer festivals, lobbying government for change and hosting their annual CAMRA awards are ways in which they work to enforce their mission.

Kingston's pub of the year 2022, The Wych Elm, was awarded the coveted crown after it was judged to reign superior from pubs in the borough in its range of beer, beer quality and ambiance.

Nestled in the heart of its community, The Wych Elm is a family run and independently owned pub with a prime focus on serving its neighbourhood with great food, quality drink and excellent friendly service.

A leafy, secluded garden makes it the perfect sanctuary during the summer months and its log burners in the winter ensure it is the ideal boozer all year round. Boasting a 92" projected screen it is also a reliable spot for watching live sport.

The former two bar pub has been opened up, but a partition can be closed to separate the areas. Wooden floors with rugs and painted walls form the décor and photos on the walls illustrate Kingston's aviation history, as the famous Sopwith factory was located just down the road.

Previous winners of the award include The Willoughby Arms of Kingston and The Albion and The Antelope of Surbiton.
