A New Malden resident is just days away from taking part in this weekend's London Marathon who has already raised a remarkable £2,500 in support of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).
Manju Patwari will be taking on the renowned 26.2-mile challenge in support of cancer patients and those who have lost loved ones to the devastating disease
The New Malden resident first got into running after giving her local Parkrun a go and has not looked back since, revealing that competing in the London Marathon has always been a dream of hers.
Speaking to Kingston Nub News, Manju said: "The Institute of Cancer Research is very close to my heart. I have seen cancer affect so many people - my grandmother, my father-in-law, my sister-in-law, my cousin, friend and work colleague. I have seen first hand both how much suffering it causes, but also how much treatments have improved as a result of research over the years.
"I started running at my local Parkrun a few years ago, and I enjoyed it so much because it's something anyone can do. I then moved to longer distances, kept myself going by just putting one foot in front of the other. I'm so happy to have the opportunity to be able to run for the Institute of Cancer Research, to both help the cause, but also realise my dream of completing the London Marathon."
Manju has launched a fundraising page on behalf of the world's leading cancer research institute and ahead of her participation on Sunday, and has already exceeded her £2,500 target with an unbelievable £2,625 raised so far. For those wanting to donate, Manju's fundraiser can be accessed here.
Lannah Carbonilla, Head of Supporter Engagement at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, added: "We're really grateful to have the support of Manju and all of the #teamICR runners at this year's TCS London Marathon. Getting out there and training for a marathon, while also attempting to hit a fundraising target, is no easy feat, and we've been so impressed by the dedication and commitment of our supporters.
"We hope that Manju and all our runners will be spurred on by the knowledge that they're helping to make a difference for people affected by cancer up and down the country. Every pound raised means that our research can keep moving forward, and every step taken towards that finish line brings our researchers one step closer to finishing cancer."
