Speirs House, a "well-established" nursing home in New Malden, has been rated "Good" across all categories by the regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Compassion, choice and community spirit were the main themes in the recently released inspection report, which rated the home "Good" in all five areas of 'safe', 'effective', 'caring', 'responsive', and 'well-led'.
The CQC praised Speirs House – a non-profit home part of leading charitable group Greensleeves Care – for its strong learning culture, rapid response to improvements, and a management team described as "visible, knowledgeable and supportive."
Inspectors found that staff were well-trained and caring, and deeply committed to empowering residents to make their own choices and maintain independence in their day-to-day lives.
During the inspection in September, families and residents spoke warmly about the quality of care they receive, saying they felt safe, respected and listened to.
Meanwhile a resident shared how they were invited to sit in on staff interviews – a reflection of the home's inclusive approach.
The report found that people were fully involved in planning their care and that staff delivered support with "sensitivity, preserving privacy and dignity."
The inspection also noted that care was based on the latest evidence and good practice, with residents' health, nutrition and personal preferences closely supported.
Meals were tailored to individual tastes, and staff worked closely with families and health professionals to achieve the best outcomes. Inspectors observed that even those unable to communicate verbally were actively included through attentive, compassionate interaction.
Speirs House recently achieved Gold Standards Framework accreditation – a national standard that recognises exceptional end of life care.
CQC reviewers also highlighted a "culture of continuous improvement," with Speirs House providing staff the time and resources to develop their skills and implement ideas.
Leaders and staff shared a vision "based on listening, learning and trust," with wellbeing and collaboration at the heart of daily operations.
Speirs House's Home Manager Feruna O'Donovan said: "This result reflects the dedication, warmth and professionalism of our wonderful team, and the family spirit that runs through everything we do at Speirs House.
"As part of Greensleeves Care, we believe in helping people feel good about care – creating a home where residents truly feel valued, safe and supported; families can be confident in their loved ones' care, and colleagues are empowered."
Situated in tranquil gardens on Traps Lane, Speirs House has been part of the New Malden community under Greensleeves Care since 2010 and is consistently rated the number one not-for-profit care home in the area based on independent reviews by residents and relatives.
Offering residential, nursing and dementia care, the home continues to set the standard for compassionate, person-centred living in later life.
