The MP for Kingston and Surbiton says he believes the UK "should offer to send troops to Greenland as part of a joint NATO operation under Danish and UK command", following US president Donald Trump's threats towards Greenland.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ed Davey MP said: "If Trump is serious about security, he'd agree to participate and drop his outrageous threats.
"Tearing the NATO alliance apart would only play into the hands of Putin."
The Liberal Democrat leader added: "It's time we started taking Trump's threats seriously.
"God forbid if Greenland is attacked, the UK should immediately sanction the Trump Organization and think twice about whether we want US forces on our soil at all."
He continued: "According to some, we live in a world that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power.
"Believe it or not, those aren't the words of Vladimir Putin. It's the official position of the Trump White House.
"In the first week of 2026, Trump is already tearing up the rules and breaking international law, and now he's threatening a country for refusing to hand over territory.
"That's not strength, it's unhinged. Kier Starmer must stand up for international law and God forbid if any attack against Greenland does take place, the UK immediately should place sanctions on the Trump Organisation.
"We should place immediate bans on its operations in Britain, and we should hold a parliamentary debate on whether or not we should continue hosting US forces on our soil at all.
"I wish I didn't have to say any of this, but it is time we start taking Trump's threats seriously."
