A man who fell from one of the upper levels of Kingston's Bentall Centre on Saturday afternoon is believed to have avoided life-threatening injuries.

Police were called to the Kingston shopping centre at 2.30pm after reports of a man who had fallen.

One eye witness explained how she was on the ground floor with her family when they heard a loud thud and groaning and screaming coming from a man.

She said: "We'd just witnessed a man falling from a great height in the shopping mall. We aren't sure if he fell from level 1,2 or 3 to the ground but definitely level 1 down.

"First he was rolling around holding his head, many people were calling 999, some in shock not knowing what to do, security came running over and put blankets on the guy. It must have been at least 30 minutes when sirens were heard, then Air ambulance flying over. The poor guy had to wait a while."

A statement from Kingston Police did not disclose the height of the fall or what had caused the incident in the first place but did confirm the man had avoided life threatening injuries.

The statement read: "Police were called at 14:30hrs on Saturday, 17 December to reports of a man fallen at the Bentall Centre in Kingston.

"Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended. The man was taken to a south London hospital; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening."
