The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, has said that he is putting £6 billion aside to help councils "build the homes [the] city desperately needs, with a major focus on new social-rent and council homes".

He said: "When councils have the funding and certainty they need, they can deliver genuinely affordable homes at scale."

However, the money has not been allocated to any specific projects yet.

In an interview with ITV News, the London Mayor added: "I've had huge interest from council's across London.

"The amount of interest from councils exceeds the amount of money we've been given, even though it's a record breaking amount.

So over the next few weeks, we will work with all 32 boroughs to work out with them how many homes they can build and how quickly they can build them so we can address, finally, this housing crisis."

He continued: "The housing crisis wasn't created overnight and it won't be solved overnight either."

Sir Sadiq and the Greater London Authority (GLA) recently approved plans to build 586 new homes on protected land in Motspur Park, despite Kingston Council previously rejecting the plans, because homes built in Kingston between 2020 and 2025 was "significantly under target".

Kingston Council also earmarked nearly 20,000 new homes to be built across the borough over the next 15 years in its new Local Plan, which was released in June.

The final draft plan allocates stations and car parks for new housing, including 310 homes for Kingston Station, 175 homes on the western part of Surbiton Station Car Park and 105 homes for Tolworth Station.
