The Labour government has announced a major funding boost for hospitals across South West London, including Kingston Hospital, delivering vital upgrades to improve patient care and address urgent infrastructure needs.

The investment includes over £11 million for Kingston and Richmond NHS Trust, £9 million for St George's, and £12 million for Epsom and St Helier.

According to Labour, "this investment comes at a critical time. More than a decade of Conservative and Coalition underfunding has left NHS buildings crumbling".

A recent UNISON report revealed staff regularly face rats and other pests in deteriorating hospital facilities.

The funding, part of the Government's 2025–2026 Estates Safety Fund, will cover essential upgrades for staff and patient safety, such as building repairs, better ventilation and energy systems, new lifts, fire safety improvements, and fixes to water and electrical infrastructure.

Addressing urgent fire safety needs, installing new air handling units, and delivering other essential infrastructure upgrades are all part of Labour's national mission to rebuild the NHS over the next ten years.

NHS waiting lists are falling, GP recruitment is rising, and the government's target to deliver two million extra appointments has already been met. This is a major milestone in Labour's long-term plan to restore the NHS and transform services over the next decade.

Kezia Coleman, Chair of Kingston and Surbiton Labour Party said: "This £32 million investment into our local hospitals, including Kingston, St George's, and Epsom and St Helier, alongside new funding for GP services, is a clear sign that Labour is rebuilding the NHS after years of neglect.

" It's a real step forward for patients and staff in Kingston and across South West London."

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting, said: "A decade and a half of underinvestment left hospitals crumbling, with burst pipes flooding emergency departments, faulty electrical systems shutting down operating theatres, and mothers giving birth in outdated facilities that lack basic dignity.

"We are on a mission to rebuild our NHS through investment and modernisation. Patients and staff deserve to be in buildings that are safe, comfortable and fit for purpose. Through our Plan for Change, we will make our NHS fit for the future."

In total the Government is investing £1.2 billion to fix crumbling hospitals and schools across England. The announcement forms part of Labour's broader plan to restore public services and deliver change after years of decline.
