Two new community facilities have opened in Kingston, both funded by the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy (NCIL), which is money levied on developers building in the borough.

Whether you fancy yourself as King of the Ring or Chess Queen, two new community facilities have opened in Kingston.

The Two Kings Boxing Club has transformed and taken up residence in the previously derelict building in the Kingston Road Recreation Ground. The new facility, which includes a community cafe and toilet facilities, has a fully equipped boxing gym and a boxing ring for sparring and skills training. The gym equipment is also available for anyone to use for non-contact boxing training and general fitness. The whole project was made possible due to funding from NCIL, the boxing club, the Friends of Kingston Road Rec and Park Tennis in Kingston.

Two Kings is run by ex-boxer Luke Moran and professional A.B.A. coach Ben Young. The gym aims to promote fitness through boxing and an inclusive 'family' atmosphere.

Also funded by NCIL, Kingston opens its first outdoor permanent chess installation at the Fairfield Recreation Ground in the centre of Kingston this week. The Chess Corner features three concrete chess tables with integrated seating and is located near the sports changing room and children's playground on the north Fairfield Road side of the park.

Chess Corner, which is expected to be the first of three installations in Kingston, will be officially open this week on 28 September with an event from 4-6pm, where residents are welcome to come and try their hand against experts from Kingston Chess Club. Details of the event can be found on our Kingston Heritage website
