Kingston’s council tax could increase by over £500 in next five years

The price of council tax could rise by nearly £600 in some areas of the UK, including Kingston, if current trends continue.
According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, households in England are currently paying an average of £1,770 a year in council tax, which is an increase of £102 compared to the 2024/25 financial year, which was itself up by £90 compared to the previous year.
In fact, council tax bills have been rising steadily every year since 2016.
A decade ago, the country's average council tax bill was £1,078 a year, meaning that bills have gone up by an average of £69 each year in that time.
Councils are able to increase the amount they charge by five per cent a year without the need for a local referendum.
And cash-strapped councils across the country have been regularly increasing bills by this maximum amount.
If councils continue to increase their bills by five per cent a year, then the average bill will rise by nearly £400 by 2030 to £2,151.
But that is just the national average. Some councils would see average bills rise by almost £600 a year to well over £3,000.
In Kingston, it is expected that council tax bills will rise by £527 to £2,972.
However, nearby Elmbridge has the highest potential increase of £599 to £3,380.
