Kingston’s Borough Sports Awards to take place next week

This year's Borough Sports Awards are taking place on Monday 11 November at Kingston Guildhall.

The Kingston Borough Sports Awards happen annually and are open to Sports participants who live in the Royal Borough of Kingston and Coaches or volunteers that support a Kingston Club or organisation.

The award categories are:

Sports Achiever of the Year

The Sports Achiever of the Year award is for an individual who meets at least two minimum of the following criteria:

  • made significant progress in their sport
  • has shown exceptional dedication and commitment
  • exceeded expectations in their sporting performance
  • continued to uphold their part as an outstanding role model

Youth Sports Achiever of the Year

The Youth Sports Achiever of the year is for an individual aged up to 21 years of age and meets the following criteria:

  • Has made significant progress in their chosen sport
  • Shows a high level of dedication and commitment
  • Respected for their sportsmanship and fair play

Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year 

The Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year award is for an individual who meets at least two minimum of the following criteria:

  • made significant progress in their sport
  • has shown exceptional dedication and commitment
  • exceeded expectations in their sporting performance
  • continued to uphold their part as an outstanding role model

Sports Club of the Year Award

The Sports Club of the Year Award recognises exceptional commitment to developing a club and the activities and services it offers to its local community.

Nominated clubs must meet all the following criteria:

  • must have a constitution in place
  • demonstrate the significant impact the work of the club has had over the last 12 months and how this has benefitted the local community
  • evidence of the club's commitment to developing club members (players, coaches, officials and volunteers)

Sports Team of the Year Award

The Sports Team of the Year Award is awarded to a team that has achieved outstanding competitiveness success during the year.

The category is open to teams of two people or more, so doubles pairs in racquet sports are included. 

Junior Sports Team of the Year Award

The Junior Sports team of the year award is for a Kingston-based team who have achieved success during the year and who is competing at youth ages up to and including U18.

Active School of the year 

The Active school of the year award can be made to any Kingston school which can provide:

  • Evidence of the whole school taking part in physical activity and meeting the guidelines of 60 active minutes each day.
  • Details of how they have actively introduced initiatives to encourage and support healthy and happy pupils.

Neil Desai Award

The Neil Desai Award is presented to a young person aged 25 years or under who has not only achieved in their chosen sport but more importantly, has given something back (ie voluntary coaching, fundraising or mentoring young people.

Nominees must meet all the following criteria:

  • must be 25 years of age or under on 31 July the year of the award nomination.
  • must live in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames or attend a sports club within the borough
  • has contributed something back into their sport (details must be given)

The Mayor's Trophy

The Mayor's Trophy is presented to a sports club's unsung hero - someone who works tirelessly behind the scenes (ie kit washer, treasurer, secretary or someone that keeps it all together).

Nominees must meet all the following criteria:

  • must live in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames or attend a sports club within the borough
  • has served their club for a minimum of two years
  • demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to a sport or club
  • made a strong impact within the club

Eileen Gray Trophy

The Eileen Gray Trophy is presented to either a coach or an athlete who inspires others - someone who has motivated and been an inspiration to others to reach their full potential.
