Kingston Wheelers Cycling Club celebrates its 100th anniversary
Kingston Wheelers Cycling Club (KWCC) is running a special programme of activities as its members celebrate the organisation's 100th anniversary.
The first will be a centenary party held in March at Malden Wanderers Cricket Club, hosted by Denny Gray from The Cycling Podcast and retired Olympic gold medalist Joanna Rowsell MBE.
KWCC reports that the evening of commemoration, celebration, dining and dancing has already sold out, a testament to the dedicated community surrounding the club.
The club is taking the momentous anniversary to create a more detailed account of their history via an "online experience," with research headed by Club Historian Gafyn MacMillan.
This will be accompanied by a special edition magazine and a temporary exhibition in Kingston itself, with the latter's location to be announced at a later date.
Formed in 1924 by six cyclists – including founding member Bill Orpin – KWCC's community has grown to over 500 members in 2024.
This legacy is reflected in the club's special edition jersey produced by cycling equipment designer Le Col, with the design taking inspiration from previous versions created in 1960 and 1985.
Other centenary celebrations include a 100-mile cycling route across the South Downs called the Hundred of Kingston, a special edition pale ale from Park Brewery, and more.
In a statement to the club, KWCC's president Derrek 'Del' Griffiths described how "our brilliant volunteers have enabled the club to go from strength to strength".
He went on to say: "To be president in the club's Centenary year is an absolute honour."
Full details of the upcoming festivities can be found on the club's here.
