The Telegraph has named the borough of Kingston upon Thames one of the best places in the UK to retire in 2024.

The conservative news platform compiled the list by looking at areas across the UK comparing their crime levels, number of hospitals, GPs, shops, and green spaces to choose the top ten.

The data for each consideration was analysed by Frances McDonald of Savills Research, analysed data for Telegraph Money.

He found that retirees "are likely to reconsider the location of their home to ensure the convenience and proximity of local amenities and health services, so they can be less reliant on others in later life."

Kingston came in at number nine, just above Westminster. Exeter in Devon came in as the number one spot, followed by Merton and then Richmond in place number three.

Averaging just under £710,000 for a Kingston property, Dan Miller (of Savills) judged the town as offering better value than Wimbledon or Richmond.

The article said: "One of the main attractions for those retiring or downsizing in the Kingston area is being able to live by the water,"

Miller said riverside developments are particularly popular among retirees as they tick "all the boxes": location, lateral living and suitability as a lock-up-and-leave property.

While Miller acknowledged Kingston lacks a picturesque village feel like Richmond and others, he added the town is often ranked as one of London's top shopping centres.

"What we also see among downsizers is a desire to prioritise an active and social lifestyle, so having great shopping, restaurants and cafés within easy reach is particularly important to them," Miller said.

"The Rose Theatre, in central Kingston, is extremely popular and there's a range of sporting options

from tennis and golf to rowing and plenty of green space for walks too."

The other places in London named as some of the best places to retire in London are:

  • Merton, south-west London
  • Sutton, south-west London
  • Bromley, south-east London
  • Richmond-upon-Thames, south-west London
  • Westminster, central London
