Kingston student inspired by experiences in hospital follows her nursing calling through Clearing
A Kingston University student secured a place on an adult nursing degree through Clearing after being inspired by how caring nurses were during a series of stays in hospital.
Darcie Boon, from Leatherhead in Surrey, has suffered with a number of chronic health conditions and believes these experiences were an important factor in choosing to pursue a nursing degree.
"I can relate to people in hospital as I have been through a lot of the same situations they are in," Boon said. "I was told for ages that I shouldn't consider being a nurse because of my health and I wouldn't be able to handle it but, despite the physical challenges, I'm so proud I have now completed my first year."
Boon had initially chosen to study biology at another university, but after her first year decided the subject was not for her. After witnessing first-hand the impact nurses can have on patients, she opted to work towards a career in nursing instead.
Exploring her options, Boon was drawn to Kingston University after she had learned about its reputation for nursing provision. It was also within easy travelling distance of her home.
"I did consider a year out but I'm so glad I decided to phone Kingston University's Clearing hotline instead," she said. "The experience was incredibly reassuring and the process of having an interview and then being offered a place was so smooth. I've really enjoyed the first year of my course and am confident I made the right decision about where to study."
Boon praised the course for its practical nature – from the opportunities for work placements in hospitals to the simulation suites on campus.
"The chance to learn on the job and really put into practice what we learn in the classroom straight away has been really rewarding," she said.
Boon advised prospective students to do their research their research and find a course that felt a good fit. "The step up from school to university is a big one," she said. "My main piece of advice for any potential students would just to be prepared and make sure you really pursue the right subject for you."
Senior lecturer in adult nursing Clare Grey commended Darcie's dedication to her studies. Grey said: "Darcie's success this year is proof that students who join the course through Clearing can really thrive."
Kingston University's Clearing hotline is open Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm until the start of term, excluding Bank Holiday on Monday 28 August.
The hotline is open for additional hours on the following dates: Thursday 17 August, 8am to 7pm; Friday 18 August, 8.30am to 6pm; Saturday 20 August, 10am to 4pm. More than 70 hotline operators will be on hand to help prospective students discuss their options and try to secure a place at Kingston University through Clearing.
