Kingston remembers - Moving services held across royal borough as residents pay respects for those who have fallen on Remembrance Sunday
Services were held across the Royal Borough of Kingston yesterday morning on Remembrance Sunday, as residents gathered to pay their respects to servicemen and women who have died in past conflicts.
With Remembrance Sunday services organised by the Royal British Legion and local church authorities, residents paid tribute at War Memorials in Kingston, Chessington, Surbiton and New Malden.
The Kingston service began with a procession from the Guildhall at 10.37am to the Kingston War Memorial for the Laying of Wreaths, which was followed by a Remembrance Service at All Saints Church. A march outside the Guildhall concluded services at around 12.30pm.
A salute was held at the steps of the Surbiton Methodist Church following a parade which marched from the Surbiton Royal British Legion Club through Hollyfield Road onto Ewell Road, up to the War Memorial for the Surbiton Service itself and then back down Ewell Road.
Chessington's service took place at the War Memorial at the Chessington Royal British Legion Club followed by a service at 11.15am at the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin on Church Lane. In New Malden, the parade commenced from Presburg Road at 9am and marched around the foundation roundabout, down the High Street to the New Malden War Memorial where the Remembrance Day service was held at 9.30am.
A two-minute silence was observed at 11am at the services in Kingston, Surbiton and Chessington with an earlier one taking place at the New Malden service.
The borough's Remembrance Day services also paid tribute to civilian lives that were lost in Kingston due to the nearby Ham Works, the aircraft factory responsible for building crucial vehicles during WWI and WWII.
