Police forces across Kingston stopped 12 e-scooter riders on Friday (14 May) as use of the devices continues to soar in the UK.

At least 11 e-scooters were confiscated and all riders were reported for traffic offences.

Grove Police, which covers most of Kingston town centre, said in a Twitter post: "In an operation with @MPSCanbury @MPSTudor, 12 riders were stopped and reported for traffic offences around Kingston today.

"It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with the law! E-scooters are illegal to ride on roads and in public."

In law e-scooters are considered 'powered transporters' and are only legal to ride on private property with the permission of the owner.

Last year, the Metropolitan police seized more than 150 e-scooters and Scotland Yard reported more than 200 incidents involving the devices.

Rented e-scooters are currently being trialled in areas across the UK but Kingston is not one of them.
