One of Kingston's best-loved shopping streets, Old London Road, was closed to the public last week after a Wilko van got its wheel stuck in a manhole.

Police placed a cordon around the entrance to the road while a rescue lorry came to help the van escape.

The manhole cover was later replaced.

A spokesperson for Kingston police said: "Officers were called to Old London Road Kingston on the 19th August at 13:20 to reports of a lorry causing an obstruction in the street.

"On arrival the vehicle was found to have a wheel lodged in a manhole.

"Officers arranged for the vehicle to be removed and the manhole cover was replaced soon after."
