An old health clinic in Kingston could soon be bulldozed for a 13-storey tower block if plans for the site are approved.

Hawks Road Clinic has been used temporarily as a Covid vaccination centre during the pandemic.

A planning application has been submitted by London Square Developments and NHS Property Services which would see the former clinic knocked down for 125 homes built across two buildings of 13 and seven storeys. The existing two-storey building was used as an NHS clinic until February 2020.

The development would be "car-free", with just four disabled parking spaces proposed and 237 cycle parking spaces. Sixty-three of the homes would be affordable.

The area is already set to see major changes after plans to knock down all homes on the nearby Cambridge Road Estate for 2,170 new homes in tower blocks up to 13-storeys high were approved in late 2021. The first phase of plans for the estate was green-lit in December 2021, while phases two to five have been granted outline permission – meaning they have been approved in principle.

A London Square spokesperson said: "We are excited to have submitted the proposals for the former Hawks Road health clinic, which complements the wider regeneration of Cambridge Road Estate, supported by the council's planning committee at the end of last year.

"Our high-quality scheme would deliver at least 50% affordable and much needed new housing for the borough, reflecting the aspirations of the local community and helping local people get on the housing ladder. The plans also include a landscaped communal garden, children's play area and the provision of new commercial or community space within the scheme. We are continuing our discussions with Kingston Council on the plans, and hope that we will receive a positive determination in the coming months."

The council's Kingston and North Kingston planning sub-committee is set to discuss the application next Thursday. NHS Property Services has been contacted for comment.
