Housing sites across Kingston will be getting new camera sensors in a Council bid to crack down on fly-tipping.

10 estates in areas of Kingston, Surbiton and Norbiton will have the AI technology installed.

The new cameras will activate when motion is detected in areas that have persistent fly tipping problems.

The still images will be sent to an enforcement officer for review, and if fly-tipping is seen to have occurred, a Council team will be notified.

No personal data will be stored or used unless necessary for enforcement purposes.

Cllr John Sweeney, Portfolio Holder for Business and Leisure at Kingston Council, said: "Sadly, fly-tipping has increased across London during the pandemic.

"While Kingston has the lowest fly-tipping rates in London there are several locations on housing estates that need attention.

"Using this technology we can have our eyes on those 'hotspots' 24/7. Residents expect the council to catch, fine and prosecute persistent fly-tippers.

"These cameras along with additional enforcement officers joining us soon will help fight against fly-tipping in Kingston."

Funding for the cameras comes from Kingston Council's internet of things partnership with the InnOvaTe project.

The new cameras will be installed in the following sites:

- Chaffinch Close, Surbiton, KT6 7PQ

- Penrhyn Gardens, Surbiton Road, KT1 2EG

- Alpha Road Estate, Surbiton, KT5 8SN

- Alpha Road Estate, Surbiton, KT5 8SL

- Sheep House Way Estate

- Ameston KT3 5PU

- Meldone KT3 5PF

- School Lane Estate, Surbiton, KT6 7QH

- Dale Court Estate, Kingston, KT2 6JH

- Milffield / Greenleas, Kingston, KT1 2RP

- Cambridge Road Estate, Childerley, KT1 3HW

- Cambridge Road Estate, Burwell , KT1 3EQ

The move comes after residents complained of persistent fly-tipping earlier this year.
