Kingston and Surbiton MP Sir Ed Davey has criticised Boris Johnson's speech in Blackpool on Thursday morning where the prime minister offered a range of new measures aimed at easing the cost of living crisis.

Speaking at The Fylde College in Blackpool, three days since 148 of his own MP's had voted to remove him as party leader, the PM tried to put his premiership back on track.

A key focus of Johnson's speech was expanding the right to buy scheme, enabling tenants of housing association properties to get on the property ladder.

The new scheme will also raise the possibility for lower-paid workers to be able to use housing benefits to buy a house.

In a wide-ranging speech aimed at demonstrating he has not run out of ideas and is focused on issues that most matters to voters, Mr Johnson promised more help "over the next few weeks" to deal with the 40-year-high inflation driven by energy price rises.

Mr Johnson said it was time for the Government to "stop spending and start cutting taxes and regulation" and called the current tax burden an "aberration".

Responding to Johnson's speech, Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said: "Boris Johnson has lost the confidence of his party, Parliament and the country, the desperate attempt to relaunch his leadership today will do nothing to win it back.

"Johnson has no plan to deal with eye-watering prices at the pumps, the sky rocketing price of food and travel chaos.

"If Conservative MPs have any regard for this country they should do their patriotic duty and back a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons so we can get Johnson out of number 10 for good."
