KINGSTON MP Sir Ed Davey has called an attack on a peaceful parade celebrating Tamil heritage in New Malden "deeply shocking."
Sir Ed condemned the attack as "dangerous" and said he was pleased the police quickly arrested the perpetrator, with celebrations continuing at the family event.
A small pot of paint was thrown at the procession of dancers, musicians and members of the public as it made its way down New Malden high street last Saturday (22 January.)
The paint splashed at least six people taking part in the parade.
A man was arrested by police on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage and has since been released under investigation.
Police are now investigating whether the attack on the parade was motivated by racism.
Kingston and Surbiton MP, Sir Ed, was at the heritage festival that day and spoke at an event in St George's Square shortly after the parade.
Asked by Kingston Nub News for comment, the Liberal Democrat leader said: "It is deeply shocking our peaceful family parade was attacked in this dangerous way.
"We were all celebrating Kingston's wonderful Tamil community in New Malden and I'm just pleased the police acted so quickly to arrest the person.
"I'm delighted the fun and laughter at this great event, marking Tamil Heritage Month, continued and I want to thank the organisers, everyone who came and of course the police."
Around 4,000 Tamils live in Kingston and it is the second most spoken language in the borough.
January was declared Tamil heritage month in London for the first time in 2022.
Mr Davey has since tabled a motion to Parliament calling for the month to be recognised nationally.
