Families across Kingston and surrounding communities are being invited to take part in a completely free seven-day challenge to sort through children's outgrown belongings, reduce waste and make space at home before Christmas.

Called Outgrown, Not Wasted, the initiative encourages parents to look again at clothes, toys, books, shoes and baby equipment that children no longer use, rather than leaving perfectly good items forgotten in cupboards.

Instead of attempting a major household clear-out in one weekend, families can tackle a different category of belongings each day.

The first six days cover children's clothing, toys, books, baby equipment, shoes and accessories, and larger items. The seventh day focuses on deciding what happens to everything collected.

For each belonging, families are encouraged to choose one of five outcomes: keep it, pass it on to another family, donate it, recycle it responsibly or sell it.

The challenge was created by Karolina Gudes, a mum of two from Broughton in North Wales and founder of Kidora, a UK family platform.

It grew from her own experience of seeing useful children's belongings accumulate at home as her children grew, with many items still in good condition but no longer needed.

Speaking about the initiative, Gudes said: "Children outgrowing something does not mean it has stopped being useful. A coat, toy or book that one child has finished with could be exactly what another family needs."

Kingston already has local examples of how reusing children's belongings can benefit other households.

Growbaby Kingston provides good-quality new and second-hand baby clothing and equipment for children up to five, completely free of charge and regardless of a family's income or background.

The organisation encourages donations of suitable items, although anyone wishing to contribute should check its current requirements and availability before arranging a drop-off.

Kingston Council has also supported reuse through community activities, including a free baby-clothing exchange held alongside a reusable nappy event earlier this year.

These initiatives are independent of Outgrown, Not Wasted, but demonstrate how clothing and equipment that one family no longer needs can continue to be useful.

For Kingston parents preparing for Christmas, the seven-day challenge could begin with sorting winter coats, reviewing toy boxes or finding books that are ready for another child to enjoy.

Children can get involved by rediscovering forgotten games, choosing favourite belongings to keep and identifying suitable items they would be happy to share.

The campaign also encourages responsible reuse. Parents should check baby equipment for damage, missing parts, current safety guidance and product recalls before donating, selling or passing it on. Some items may not be safe to reuse.

Kidora operates a UK parent-to-parent marketplace specialising in preloved baby and children's items, supporting local collection and nationwide delivery. However, selling is only one possible outcome of the challenge.

Participation is completely free, with no registration, purchase or payment required.

A downloadable seven-day checklist, posters and ready-made resources are available for families, schools, nurseries, PTAs and community organisations to share.

Kingston families can begin whenever convenient and complete the challenge at their own pace.
