Kingston: Demolition of Kingfisher Leisure Centre due to start next week
Demolition of the beloved Kingfisher Leisure Centre is due to start next week with plans in place for the process to be completed by the end of the year so construction on the new build can start.
The Kingfisher Leisure Centre has been shut since late 2019 after it was decided that repairs to fix the roof would cost more than £5 million.
Plans to bulldoze the centre were approved in March 2022 despite a petition signed by more than 3,800 locals fighting to save it.
The new leisure complex, estimated to be costing £40 million, will include a 5-a-side rooftop football pitch, two swimming pools with spectator seating, climbing walls and flexible community spaces.
The scheme is part of the council's 'Transform Kingston' programme aimed at connecting more effectively with the neighbouring library and museum, whilst attracting more residents and visitors to explore Kingston's unique history and culture.
Despite a council-led consultation that found 75 per cent of locals supported the introduction of the new leisure centre, a clear divide among residents remains.
Those opposing plans fear the end of 2024 is an unrealistic target set for the new leisure centre to be opened, and remain doubtful regrading its financial and physical accessibility for all.
Commenting on the latest step of the new community leisure centre, Kingston Council's Portfolio Holder for Assets, Leisure and Commissioning Cllr Noel Hadjimichael said: "This is a significant milestone on our journey towards delivering this fantastic new community leisure complex.
"It will bring high quality, accessible features for all our residents and visitors, and will help regenerate and revitalise Kingston town centre at a time where the borough's economy and communities need it most."
