Kingston Council approves traffic management measures in Berrylands

'I like the idea of getting rid of roads as car parks, no one wants to live in a car park, and I like the idea of trying to increase flow. I think a lot of traffic problems will just disappear,' says Kingston councillor Jackie Davies.

Traffic management measures will be installed in a Kingston neighbourhood to cut congestion.

Kingston Council approved the measures for Berrylands, in Surbiton, to tackle queues forming along the roads due to parked cars.

The plans will see parking spaces removed, and some unrestricted parking bays changed to a maximum one-hour stay on Hollyfield Road.

Extra single yellow lines will be installed on Raeburn Avenue, while additional double yellow lines will be painted on Raeburn Avenue, at junctions along Chiltern Drive and Pine Gardens and on Berrylands Road to further reduce parking.

Tolworth Close at its exit onto Tolworth Broadway will also be closed to all vehicles on a trial basis.

The closure will be reviewed six months after its installation, to decide whether to make it permanent.

The council's Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee unanimously approved the proposals on 17 December.

Lib Dem councillor Jackie Davies said: "I like the idea of getting rid of roads as car parks, no one wants to live in a car park, and I like the idea of trying to increase flow. I think a lot of traffic problems will just disappear."

Highways officers will also consider installing further double yellow lines on Alexandra Drive, Raeburn Avenue and Surbiton Hill Park, after suggestions from Lib Dem councillor Anita Schaper.

A report by council officers said the authority aims to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in Berrylands by installing the measures, after considering feedback from residents.

The scheme has £70,000 in funding from Transport for London (TfL) and will be rolled out in the 2024/25 financial year.

The report added: "The schemes will improve existing crossing points making them safer to cross thereby improving the local environment generally.

"The Tolworth Close scheme promotes cycling and walking by reducing vehicular traffic on Tolworth Close. Encouraging sustainable travel modes within and through the area will have a positive impact on people's health and wellbeing."
