2021 MAY have been a challenging year, especially for care homes, but at Signature at Coombe Hill Manor in Kingston upon Thames there are many reasons to be cheerful.

Below, the care home looks back on some of the more uplifting moments from the past year which show the vitality of its residents and determination of its staff.

1.Staff go the extra mile to get vaccinated

On January 18 most of the home's residents and 63 of its staff got the covid-19 jab in a process that took just two hours.

It ensured that those most vulnerable to the illness had life-saving protection.

Managers at the home also supported staff to get COVID-19 vaccinations by providing a drop-off/pick up service in a mini bus.

2. Karla achieves her NVQ

Hard-working team member Karla achieved her NVQ 3 in Adult Social Care last June.

She gained the qualification after more than a year of course-work and study, demonstrating she has the leadership skills needed to advance her career.

Messages of congratulations from her colleagues poured in as she received her certificate from residential manager Daniel.

A spokesperson for the home said: "Everyone at Coombe Hill Manor is especially proud of Karla."

3. Residents take a trip to the Surrey Hills

During the many months of lockdown residents at the home enjoyed a variety of activities.

These ranged from 'Ladies Day' at Ascot to poker nights and 1920s themed balls. Art activities and baking were also popular.

In summer as restriction eased some were able to travel further afield in the home's minibuses.

They had a picnic while enjoying the beautiful sights of Newland Corner in the Surrey Hills on Kingston's doorstep.

4. Letters of gratitude

In August Coombe Hill Manor marked World Senior Citizen's Day.

The day raises awareness of the issues that are faced by older adults, and is dedicated to appreciating the home's residents for the services they have given in their lives.

The home asked families of residents to write letters of gratitude sharing their memories and love.

A spokesperson said: "Each resident received a letter to open and keep and as you can imagine, there wasn't a dry eye in the house!"

5. Presents from Canbury School

After another activity-packed autumn the home was preparing for Christmas.

They received a welcome surprise when pupils from nearby Canbury School came to visit on December 9, bearing beautifully wrapped presents for residents.

In a Facebook post thanking the school, Coombe Hill Manor said: "We are truly blessed to have such wonderful community outreach at Kingston and it is always such a delight for our residents when children come to visit.

"On behalf of Coombe Hill Manor's staff and residents, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!"
