Police confiscated a hunting knife from Chessington North station last week, as part of a joint operation with the British Transport Police to reduce anti-social behaviour and crime entering the area.

In a Twitter post dated Wednesday 12 May Chessington North police said: "Yesterday officers from Chessington North, Chessington South & Tolworth Safer Neighbourhood Teams conducted a successful joint operation with BTP at Chessington North station.

"We seized this hunting knife, helping make London a safer place."

Kingston Police later added: "On Tuesday officers from Chessington North, Chessington South & Tolworth Safer Neighbourhood Teams conducted a successful joint operation with BTP at Chessington North station aimed at reducing ASB and crime coming into the area."

"During the operation this weapon was seized."

Commenters on social media were shocked at the discovery but supportive of the police's work.

One person said: "That's a bit close to home for my liking.

"Thank you to all the police officers risking their own lives to take these weapons off our streets."

Another added: "Well done, frightening what some people think they need to carry."

The crackdown took place on Tuesday 11 May at Chessington North and South stations.

During the operation at Chessington South station, drugs were seized and a person was reported for a public order offence.

British Transport Police said at the time: "Clapham Proactive Team conducted a successful joint operation at Chessington South Railway Station this afternoon, supporting industry partners & providing reassurance to members of the public.

"1 drugs seizure, 1 person reported for public order. @MPSChessingtonN @MPSKingston."
