ACCLAIMED play 'A Monster Calls' is coming to Kingston's Rose Theatre this Spring.

The award-winning family show will run from late March to early April 2022 before transferring to the Bristol Old Vic where it had its premiere.

The play is an adaptation of Patrick Ness's young adult book of the same name (also turned into a film) and directed by Sally Cookson - known for her inventive adaptations of Peter Pan and Jane Eyre.

A Monster Calls won the 2019 Olivier award for Best Entertainment and Family show and will be brought to the Rose by Jonathan Church Theatre Productions and Global Creatures.

The cast of the 2022 has been announced with the main role of Conor going to Anthony Aje while Keith Gilmore reprises his performance as the Monster.

Bridgette Amofah will play Mum, Anita Reynolds Grandma and the roles of Harry and Lily will be played by Greg Bernstein and Eleanor Kane.

They will be joined by other cast members and musicians for the show which runs at the Rose from Thursday 24 March to Saturday 9 April.

A synopsis of the play reads: "Thirteen year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved away. But now his mum is sick and not getting any better. His grandmother won't stop interfering and the kids at school won't look him in the eye.

"Then, one night, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking. It's come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it's finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears."

Director Sally Cookson said: "We are so thrilled to be remounting our adaptation of A Monster Calls, especially at a time when young people are reeling from the effects of the Pandemic.

"The production shines a light on what it means to be a teenager in a tough world and uses the shared experience of theatre to remind us that we are not alone."

The play runs for 2hrs 20mins including an interval and is suitable for children aged 10 and over.

Wednesday 6 April will be a socially distanced performance and 7 April will be captioned.

2for1 tickets are available with purchases of tickets to see Persuasion, an adaptation of the Jane Austen classic novel which will play at the Rose from 26 February to 19 March 2022.

The offer is available to National Lottery players, valid only on full price tickets and can't be used with group bookings.
