Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a house fire on Kingston Road, New Malden this morning.

The Brigade was called at 08 37 and the fire was under control by 10 30. Fire crews from New Malden, Surbiton, Kingston and Wimbledon and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The ground floor, first floor and roof of the mid-terraced house were destroyed by the fire.

A man left the building before the brigade arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was mobilised and used as a water tower to get water onto the fire externally.

Congestion to New Malden High Street, the A3 and back into Kingston has resulted with crews expected to remain on the scene throughout the afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
