The family of a rower who was found dead in the River Thames after a boat capsized have paid tribute to the "loving" father.

The body of Peter Lawson, 68, was recovered yesterday after he entered the water near Sunbury Lock on 11 October.

Five other people were rescued.

Peter's family said: "He will be remembered fondly as a gentle and loving husband, a thoughtful and responsible brother, a kind and caring father and an absolutely wonderful grandpa."

His family added that he was an "extremely experienced" rower and a British rowing umpire.

They said they had been "overwhelmed" by the support shown in the rowing community.

"His other passion in life was singing, and he was a member of four choirs including The Royal Choral Society," the family added.

An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of Peter's death, but it is not being treated as suspicious, police say.

Chief Inspector Andy Jenkins said: "Our thoughts remain with Peter's family during this unimaginably difficult time."
