Vital road works are being conducted on A308 Hampton Court Road to Hampton Wick, causing massive congestion for commuters and other drivers.

Thames Water Company are investigating the connection between a fire hydrant and a huge mains water supply and are carrying out work to fix it.

Tom Hinks, Highway's Inspector for Richmond and Wandsworth, said: "If it is just the main, which is a very large main, [the work] will be into next week. If it is just the fire hydrant hopefully the works will be concluded this week."

Only one lane is partially closed, however, as Hinks admits, it is in a really awkward place.

"For safety we have had to take a lane out by the roundabout," Hinks said. "Because of the dangers of the traffic as two lanes go over the roundabout of Kingston bridge so there could be accidents."

The utilities team need to get a permit from Richmond Council and they've asked until 11 August. Hinks added: "They appreciate the sooner they can get in and out the better."

There is also some restricted access from the High Street.
