A train station may not sound like something you can 'adopt' but South Western Rail are allowing you to do just that.

SWR operate a group adoption programme for a number of their stations across the network.

Groups adopting stations elsewhere have worked with SWR to add planters and art displays, introduce a book swap scheme, help keep stations litter free and create community spaces.

Now Friends of Surbiton Station are looking to form a group to adopt their station.

The group said: "Having local people involved in their station creates more pride in the building, reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the travelling experience for everyone.

"We are looking to connect like-minded residents who may be interested in forming a group to 'adopt' Surbiton Station through this programme. Together, you will own and manage this adoption group."

The sort of people they are looking for include regular commuters, people interested in the history of the station or local residents who want to improve the station environment.
