Up to 2,000 new homes, a public park, shops and cafés could be built on green belt land in South London, under newly released plans.

Developer Poppymill has put forward proposals for a new development in Chessington, known as Hook Park, which it has been working on since 2020.

The plans would see around 2,000 new homes built on the 50-acre site, which borders the A3, including 50 per cent affordable housing. The homes would be offered under a mix of tenures, with more than 600 homes for families.

The development would have 20 acres of open space, including an 8.4-acre public park at its centre, new shops, cafés and workspaces.

It would have new pedestrian and cycle routes, access to public transport and improved connections across the site. The proposals also include the introduction of restrictions along Clayton Road to stop rat-running traffic and investment in local sports facilities and playing fields.

While the site is green belt, Poppymill argued the land is "compromised and inaccessible to the public".

The developer said the proposals would "unlock neglected and inaccessible land, to deliver a new family-friendly neighbourhood that centres around a huge public park and community spaces".

Poppymill will gather feedback on the plans through a series of consultation events this summer, starting this week, ahead of submitting a planning application to Kingston Council. Residents will be able to meet the project team, view the proposals and share their views.

Rupert Spice, founder of Poppymill, said: "We want to hear your thoughts on our plans and understand how we can work together to ensure Hook Park becomes a vibrant, inclusive, and lasting asset for Chessington, opening up inaccessible land for the benefit of all."

The consultation will launch on Thursday (June 26) and close on July 31. Details of the drop-in events can be found below:

June 26, 4pm-8pm: Saint Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Leatherhead Road, KT9 2HY

June 28, 10am-2pm: The King's Centre, Coppard Gardens, Chessington, KT9 2GZ

July 2, 4pm-8pm: Saint Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Leatherhead Road, KT9 2HY

The team will also hold pop-up events across Chessington to give residents more opportunities to share their feedback on the proposals.
