Construction of the new Kingston Leisure Centre is racing ahead, as the steel frame skeleton of the building is now complete, and the distinctive timber roof beams are in place, according to Kingston Council.

The team is currently proving the water tightness of the main pool and starting to clad the walls of the building, ready to be weatherproof in the coming months.

Designed to be welcoming, inclusive and sustainable, the new centre will provide the range of activities that residents told the council they wanted to see, including a 25 metre, eight lane swimming pool, a teaching and learning pool, a large fitness gym, three multi-purpose studios, a sports hall, squash courts, a health suite, soft play area and café.

Kingston Council says that one of its key focuses " is ensuring residents of all ages and abilities have a wide range of opportunities to be active and healthy - from gyms and swimming pools, school and community sports, wellbeing programmes and more".

It added: "The new leisure centre, which is set to open in Spring next year, is a major part of this commitment."

The project will also deliver new outdoor play spaces, areas to unwind and socialise, and a better connection into the town centre, as well as using sustainable technologies throughout the building that will help to meet the council's net-zero targets.

Cllr Alison Holt, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Economic Development said: "I'm so pleased that our residents can see that we're making great progress in bringing the new Kingston Leisure Centre to life, and I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has worked hard to help us get to this point.

This building is designed to be a hive of activity, and to keep our community healthy and thriving for years to come. I look forward to seeing this building full of life and energy when I come for a swim next year!"
