Staff at the Royal Star & Garter in Surbiton are continuing to run a beloved fitness session in a tribute to the resident who lead it.
Ken Harris, an ex-soldier and former fitness instructor, started the class named the Star moves with Ken soon after moving to the care home in September 2021.
Speaking last year, Mr Harris said: "It means a hell of a lot to me that I can do these classes, and that people trust me and are willing to come to training every day- it's a huge compliment."
Mr Harris sadly died shortly before last Christmas, aged 88.
Harnessing his experience as a YMCA weight instructor, teaching low-impact exercises to over-60s, Harris curated seated-movement exercises for his fellow care home residents.
With the support of the home's in-house physiotherapist, Harris designed the exercises to improve mobility of the residents and give a boost to their overall mental and physical wellbeing.
The class was so successful and popular, it took place six days a week and was even relocated to a bigger room to allow more people to join in.
Wellbeing Coordinator Suzie Elliot, who often assisted Mr Harris with the classes, said: "When I last saw him, I promised Ken that we wold continue running Star Moves with Ken. He didn't say anything- he closed his eyes, smiled and nodded. It was very emotional.
"The classes meant the world to Ken. He loved them and he was so good at it. He looked forward to it and so did the residents who took part. We miss him a lot but this means his legacy will live on - I think he'd be happy to know that."
Star Moves regulars paid tribute to Ken, and said they were grateful his classes are carrying on.
WWII veteran Phyllis, 101, said: "I think Ken would be very pleased if he knew we were still doing his classes. He was an inspiration. I'm glad they have continued in tribute to him."
RAF veteran Michael, 85, who also regularly uses the home's physiotherapy room, said: "I've got a muscle condition which is deteriorating and it's vital that I do this exercise, so Ken's classes were a gift from heaven.
"He was brilliant - he had this deep, melodic voice, and was slightly larger than life. He was a great companion and we had the same rather warped sense of humour. I still miss him an awful lot."
