Capture Kingston 2022: Kingston History Centre calling on submissions for annual photo competition
The Kingston History Centre is issuing a borough-wide call out for submissions to their annual Capture Kingston photo competition.
The competition was set up in 2001 following the death of Les Kirkin, a member of the Kingston Museum who was a highly respected local photographer and undertook photographic work for the museum for many years.
In his memory, Capture Kingston aims to ensure Kingston's photographic collection continues to record the ever- changing history of the borough.
The theme for this year's competition will be movement, and applicants have been encouraged to be creative with their interpretation of the theme.
The museum has urged those applying to take inspiration from Eadweard Muybridge, the Kingston born pioneering photographer of movement.
Last year's competition, Lockdown and Out, was based around the lockdowns enforced by Covid-19 and winners were announced across seven categories; most historically valuable, still life and artwork inspired by Covid-19, portraiture and lifestyle, best photo by an under 18, the Les Kirkin memorial prize, best photo taken south of the borough and landscape/interiors/exteriors.
A winner for Capture Kingston 2022 will be chosen across each of the five categories listed below and will have their prints, alongside a selection of runners up, displayed by the Kingston Heritage Service.
- Les Kirkin Memorial Prize (overall winner) - £100
- Under 18s - £50
- South of the Borough - £50
- Most Historically Valuable - £75
- Best photograph taken during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Celebrations – A piece of commemorative ware chosen by the Friends of Kingston Museum and Heritage Service.
