Breaking: man charged after Surbiton fight as victim remains in life-threatening condition

A man in his late 20s has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent following a fight in Surbiton on Monday evening.

Hadley Knight, 28, was charged by police yesterday and remanded in custody to appear in court today (5 January).

A man in his early 30s was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but has been bailed to return on a date at the end of the month.

Reports of a fight on Victoria Road, Surbiton's main high street, were made at around 9pm on Monday 3 January.

Emergency services were called to the scene after a man was found suffering a head injury.

He was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Victoria Road was cordoned off and closed for more than 12 hours by police.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police told Kingston Nub News today: "A man has been charged following an assault in Victoria Road, Surbiton on Monday, 3 January.

"Hadley Knight, 28 (27.06.93), of Claygate, Esher, was charged on Tuesday, 4 January with grievous bodily harm with intent.

"He was remanded in custody to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 5 January.

"Police were called at 20:59hrs on Monday, 3 January to reports of a group of people fighting in Victoria Road, Surbiton.

"Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service and found a man in his 30s with a head injury.

"He was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition. His next of kin are aware.

"A 28-year-old man was arrested nearby and later charged as above.

"A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and bailed to return on a date in late January."
