A Kingston station is set to  close for several months as it undergoes a £6 million upgrade.

Berrylands railway station, which is run by South Western Railway (SWR), will shut from 11 May until the end of September while major improvement works are carried out.

During this time, trains will continue to run through the station but will not stop.

The station, which sits on a five-metre-high embankment, opened in 1933 and is one of the few remaining stations in London that still has wooden platforms which are deemed no longer fit for purpose.

They will be replaced with new platforms made from glass-reinforced plastic, designed to extend the station's lifespan for decades.

Passengers can also expect improved lighting, CCTV, customer information screens and help points.

A rail replacement bus service will run every 30 minutes between New Malden and Surbiton while the station is closed.

Buses towards New Malden will depart from Stop B, while services to Surbiton will leave from Stop A on Surbiton Hill Park.

Passengers travelling towards London are advised to use New Malden, while those heading towards Woking should travel from Surbiton.

The closure will also see the temporary shutdown of the station's ticket office, car park, and toilet facilities.

Nearby residents may experience some disruption, including parking suspensions on Chiltern Drive, intermittent footway restrictions on Lower Marsh Lane, and occasional road closures to allow construction access.

Network Rail said the upgrade will deliver a "brighter, more welcoming station" with modern facilities once complete.
