BBC Caring Matters Features Kingston-Based book about young carers on CBeebies 'Bedtime Stories'
By Simon Bangs 26th May 2026
Young Carers in Space, a book that was created in Kingston, has featured on CBeebies' Bedtime Stories, read by actress Natalie Cassidy as part of the BBC's national Caring Matters week.
Published by John Bangs and written and illustrated by Ana Graça, the imaginative story celebrates young carers, friendship and resilience through a fun-filled space adventure designed to help younger audiences better understand the experiences of children who help care for family members.
The project was created in Kingston in partnership with Kingston Carers' Network and has involved local young carers throughout its development.
Through workshops and events, young carers helped shape elements of the stories and even contributed ideas for the book titles.
A young carer is a child or young person who helps support a family member living with a disability, illness, mental health condition or addiction.
Many young carers take on responsibilities far beyond their years while balancing school and everyday childhood life.
The creators say they "hope the project will help raise awareness of the youngest carers in society and encourage greater understanding and support for children and families affected".
Natalie Cassidy's CBeebies Bedtime Story aired on CBeebies yesterday (MOnday, 25 May) at 6:50pm and is also available on BBC iPlayer.
Free digital copies of the books and additional resources are available to download, while printed copies can also be requested for local schools and organisations to help continue spreading awareness and support for young carers and their families.
