Members of a Facebook community group have slammed plans for a new 16-storey tower on Kingston riverside.
On Monday Nub News revealed that developers London Square and Fenwick are seeking to build two towers between John Lewis and Turks Pier on the Thames.
The towers will stand at 16-storeys and 13-storeys respectively and are set to be completedin 2024 if planning permission is approved.
Called Thames Side Wharf, this would be a mixed-use development, with residential and creative space, and in an art-deco style inspired by Kingston's other buildings.
But the response of members of a Kingston community group to the news was not positive.
One commenter wrote: "Rubbish. Totally out of character. They'll be building in the river next."
"Once again, a totally hideous monstrosity," commented another.
Other commenters feared for Kingston's future.
"More over development. What happened to our Ancient Market town," said one critic.
"Words fail me - why do we need yet more high rise blocks of concrete in the town?" stated another.
"I appreciate we need to move with the times but Kingston is getting worse by the day!!"
Responding to this comment, one resident explained the development as the result of wider borough housing targets.
He said: "Simple. London's population is set to grow by a million in the next fifteen years.
"As one of thirty-two London boroughs, Kingston has to play its part, which will mean accommodating an additional 30,000 residents.
"With land at a premium, the only way is 'up'."
Developers state that the housing will be 35% affordable, but some respondents questioned whether the flats would truly be available to ordinary people to buy.
"Will be nice for the people that can afford £2000+" wrote one.
A consultation on the plans ended on Monday 9 August but more feedback sessions are planned for September.
