A major fire has broken out at a small island near Hampton.

At least one building on Thames island Platt's Eyot has been gutted by the blaze and boats are said to be at risk.

Fifteen fire engines and 100 firefighters are at the scene. The fire is emitting pillars of smoke which are reportedly visible across London.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said the brigade was called at 5.14pm to reports of a fire by Lower Sunbury Road.

They added that there have been no reports of injures so far.

Lots of bangs and pops could be heard in the area at around 6.30pm, according to local blog the Hamptonite.

In a series of Twitter posts the blog added that strong winds in the area were 'not helping' and small flames remained despite 'torrential rain.'

Nub News will post updates as we get them.
