Kingston weather update: mini-heatwave to hit borough this weekend

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 15th Jul 2021

Temperatures are set to soar in Kingston upon Thames this weekend, according to the latest Met Office forecast.

Residents will enjoy balmy weather with highs of 29 degrees Celsius likely on Sunday 18 July, when the hot weather will peak.

The mercury will start rising tomorrow, 16 July, with highs of 26 degrees predicted by the Met Office weather forecast .

The hot weather and sunshine will continue until Wednesday 21 July across the south of Britain, though for places in the north it will remain cloudy and drizzly.

According to the Met Office , there will be "early mist and patchy cloud," tomorrow morning but this will soon clear "to leave a fine and dry day, with plenty of warm sunshine."

The outlook for Saturday to Monday is "early mist and cloud soon clearing to leave plenty of warm or very warm sunshine throughout the period.

"Increasing risk of some isolated heavy showers on Monday."

However, while many Kingston residents will welcome the news, the risk of dangerous behaviour at nearby Teddington Lock is likely to increase.

Teddington Lock is 2 miles from Kingston Bridge but is popular with young people from the borough, including those living further afield in areas such as New Malden.

While many youths enjoy the area responsibly, there have been numerous reports of teenagers jumping from the bridge - a dangerous activity known as 'tombstoning' that can cause severe or fatal injuries.

Last year, the RNLI warned of the dangers of this activity.

They said: "Around the UK, many are putting themselves at huge risk by tombstoning.

"At Teddington recently, we've seen dozens of young people doing this at the Lock footbridge.

"You risk serious spinal and other injury; cold water shock on entry can kill in seconds. Please respect the water.

Cold water shock is also a risk as people are tempted to swim in the water to cool down in the hot weather.

Last month, two RNLI crew who were off-duty helped rescue a boy who got into difficulty while swimming across the river in Teddington.

How will you be enjoying the heatwave this weekend?
