Thames barrier to close today for third day in a row as flood alert issued
The Thames Barrier will close again today (Monday 12 February). for the third day in a row.
Environment Agency worker, Alan, who is a flood forecaster at the Thames Barrier said on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter): "The Thames Barrier is closing today.
"For the third day running, the 520m flood defence will be operating to protect London from flooding for the 214th time since 1982.
"A high tide combined with high flows could have flooded properties upstream of Teddington this afternoon."
A flood alert has also been issued for the River Thames from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir.
The forecast high tide at Richmond is at 16:30 today.
The Thames Barrier will be operated over this high tide due to high astronomical tide levels and river flows.
As such, the forecast high tide at Richmond will not reach the flood alert threshold.
The government website says: "The river flow at Teddington Weir is high for this time of year at 303 cubic metres per second and is steady.
"We anticipate the flows to remain high for the next few days."
The warning will be updated at 9pm tonight or when the situation changes.
