A leading expert on nuclear disarmament will speak at the latest in a series of public events organised by Quakers in South West London.

Titled Working for Peace: Reducing the Nuclear Threat, the event will feature a talk by Quaker Paul Ingram, who will explore the current state of the nuclear world order and what practical, realistic approaches can be taken to manage the situation, given the times we live in.

The event will take place at: 7:30pm on Thursday 12 October at Kingston Quaker Centre.

Paul, a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge, commented: "The Ukraine war has exposed the fragility of global governance. Governments confronting Russia run the risk of damaging critical instruments managing risks and triggering nuclear war.

"The global regime controlling nuclear weapons was already severely weakened by the failure of states to deliver on their commitments to disarm, and by the challenges from emerging technologies. The war has distracted us from world wide catastrophic risks and further damaged our collective ability to tackle climate change and the numerous other risks to our survival."

The event is the latest in a series of public events staged by Quakers in South West London to highlight their faith and the work they do. A new website - www.quakersinswlondon.org - has been created to provide further detail.
