A new pop-up exhibition exploring the untold stories of Kingston's history is starting later this month.
Kingston Unwritten will delve into the fascinating lives and untold stories of ordinary people in Kingston.
Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, a team of volunteer community researchers and local groups have created an extraordinary sound installation and multimedia display.
From pubgoers and postal workers to environmental activists, market traders, visually impaired residents, and generations of migrants who have made Kingston home, the exhibits capture life across space and time.
Researchers set out to diversify the borough archive: discovering the histories and experiences of their own communities and neighbours, adding new voices to the record, especially those who have not been foregrounded in accounts of the borough's history.
The result is an exploration of unwritten heritage often overlooked in historical records, through a mosaic of different local voices, ritual objects and creative responses.
Set up in the historic Market House, the exhibition is the first public showcase for a community research project that has underpinned Kingston 2025, the borough's flagship cultural and heritage programme which takes the 1100th anniversary of the crowning of King Athelstan in Kingston as a springboard to reflect on our past and to tell a new, diverse story about the borough.
Cllr Andreas Kirsch, leader of Kingston Council said: "Our volunteers took to the project with enthusiasm, learning the skills of a researcher, and building rapport with their subjects to uncover stories. The result is a rare thing: an archive of the extraordinary lives of Kingston people, told in their own words."
"As well as extracts from over 40 hours of new oral history material being added to the Kingston archive, visitors will be able to enjoy workshop imagery from artists and residents working together as part of Kingston 2025.
"Kingston Unwritten is a rich exploration of heritage in our communities, it demonstrates the important connections between people and places that strengthen our future."
The Kingston Unwritten exhibition brings to a fitting end a packed programme of 50 Kingston 2025 events, over a six-month period, in which thousands of residents and visitors have experienced heritage brought to life, working with talented artists, volunteers and communities.
The exhibition will run at the Ancient Market House between 10am – 5pm from 20 – 30 November.
