Do you know a Kingston pub Landlord who has gone the extra mile to support the local community?
There is still a month remaining to nominate suitable candidates for the Community Pub Hero awards.
Organised by PubAid, the annual competition was founded as a way of rewarding landlords of pubs around the country who go the extra mile to support their local communities, in recognition of the fact that every year pubs raise more than £100 million for charity and donate a further £40 million in funds or on-kind support to grassroots sports.
Among last year's finalists was a pub in Wigan which, led by licensee Rebecca Davenport, delivered 700 food parcels to local people in need during lockdown, and a further 10,000 packed lunches to children during the school holidays.
A finalist closer to home was the Angel & Crown in Richmond, whose landlord Nick Botting jumped into action when the Covid lockdown was announced, providing hot food and drinks, clothing and toiletries to anyone in need, as well as pairing with local homeless organisation SPEAR to help find accommodation for people in the local community.
Pubs throughout Kingston provide similar, equally invaluable, support to a range of charities, good causes and local people.
Be that support financial, practical or emotional, if you know a local pub and landlord eligible and deserving of recognition read on for details on how to nominate them.
Nominate a Kingston pub for the Community Pub Hero awards
There are three awards up for grabs - read the criteria for each award below and select the one that best suits your pub.
- Community Regular Hero - Recognising an individual or group of customers who help the pub's fundraising efforts or its work to support the community. They often take on thankless tasks for little reward, so if you have a loyal regular who has helped your pub to help others locally, then nominate them for this award.
- Community Support Pub Hero - Recognising licensees who help their communities. Many pubs offered vital support during lockdown: delivering supplies or cooking hot meals for vulnerable residents, or keeping people connected through online quizzes or chats. If your pub is a 'good neighbour' to your local community, then this award is for you.
- Charity Fundraising Pub Hero - Recognising pubs who support charities and other good causes through fundraising. This can be through a collection tin on the bar, charity events ranging from quizzes or auctions through to fun days, or sponsored challenges by the licensee, team members or pub customers.
Pub nominations are free of charge but entries are limited to the Community Regular Hero and ONE other award - those submitting nominations are asked not to select the same pub for the Community Support Pub Hero and the Charity Fundraising Pub Hero award.
The deadline is 31 October.
After the closing date, PubAid will review all entries and select finalists in each category. They will be invited, with their local MP, to a reception in London early next year, where PubAid will present them with a certificate before the overall winners are announced.
PubAid was founded in 2009 and works with the media and local MPs to highlight the great work carried out day-to-day by licensees, their teams and customers in pubs throughout the country. To date, the organisation works with leading pub retailers and brewers including Greene King, Fullers, Heineken, Asahi and Marstons.
