Kingston-born MP supports Mark Cavendish in BBC Sports Personality of the Year nominations
The nominations for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) award were revealed yesterday, Monday 9 December, and one Conservative MP from KIngston is not happy that retired Manx professional road racing cyclist, Mark Cavendish, didn't make the cut.
Conservative MP, Ben Obese-Jecty, who is from Kingston, asked: "How is there no space on the SPOTY list for Mark Cavendish in a year when he becomes the all-time greatest stage winner of the Tour de France against the odds; the icing on what was already an incredible sporting comeback?"
Cavendish won the award back in 2011 when he cycled his way to his 35th Tour de France stage victory in July, at the age of 39, leading him to become the successful stage hunter in the history of his sport's biggest race and helping him gain a knighthood in the process.
Champions League winner Jude Bellingham, Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson, 17-year-old darts phenom Luke Littler, and cricketer Joe Root all made the nominations for this year's SPOTY award.
