Kingston and Surbiton MP reacts to plans for new constituency boundaries, calls for

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 10th Jun 2021

Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey has reacted to plans that his constituency is set to change shape as part of widespread reforms to electoral boundaries in England that were announced yesterday (8 June).

As we reported , the proposed changes to Kingston and Surbiton would see the constituency lose Old Malden and part of Motspur park to Wimbledon while gaining some residential streets in North Kingston.

Reacting to the proposed changes, Davey told Nub News: "Boundary change proposals always seem painful because they mean you could lose people and communities you've worked for, for years - areas that you've become very attached to.

"So I want to study these proposals carefully before I send in my comments to this consultation.

"To be honest, what our democracy really needs is proper electoral reform and PR - not redrawing lines on a map."

90% of English constituencies would be affected by the boundary shake-up which is being overseen by the Boundary Commission for England and includes three stages of consultations on the initial proposals.

The first consultation runs from now until August 2 and you can take part here .
